My name is Dr. Mark Van Volkenburg. I am very proud of having been born and raised in Western New York - I love our community. Since I was a young man, I’ve always had a passion for health and wellness. I knew I wanted a career in health care but I didn’t know which profession was right for me. Early in my hockey career, I was injured and sought the services of a chiropractor. The chiropractor educated me about our body’s innate ability to heal itself, as well as many other aspects of healthcare. I was impressed by him, and the chiropractic philosophy of healthcare.
Playing hockey and being on the ice 5-6 times a week, injuries are often unavoidable. Musculoskeletal injuries, especially of the spine, are part of playing a fast paced physical sport. It became clear to me that over the counter medication simply masked the symptoms. I found that receiving regular chiropractic adjustments led to true healing. The “cause” was being addressed, not the symptoms! As I continued to receive chiropractic care, injuries decreased. The philosophy of chiropractic healthcare and the superb results convinced me that I wanted to be a chiropractor.
I attended Buffalo State College and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. During my undergraduate work, I was privileged to assist with microbiology research. We researched antibiotic resistant bacteria, environmental microbiology, and survival of bacteria in aquatic environments. After earning my undergraduate degree, I attended New York Chiropractic College. I found the course work to be rigorous. In addition to my general courses, I studied Motion Palpation, deep tissue laser therapy, scientific basis of medical lasers, general laser therapy, activator methods technique, and myofascial trigger point therapy. Upon graduating from New York Chiropractic, I was selected for the Libero A. Violini Health Center Award for the intern that performed at a high level of excellence in the area of patient evaluations, procedures and in assisting fellow interns in the development of similar skills.
In my free time, I enjoy playing hockey. At least once a week, you’ll find me on the ice. I also enjoy mountain biking, snorkeling, being outdoors, playing guitar, and traveling. But most of all, I love being with my family! I wouldn’t be who I am, or have as fulfilled a life without them.
